Jürgen Röller

Jürgen Röller studied at the University of Cologne from 1979 to 1985. Jürgen Röller worked for Küttner during his law internship. Upon completing his law internship in 1989 he joined Küttner and started to practice as an attorney.

Jürgen Röller practices in the areas of individual and collective employment law. He represents employers - as well as employees and their representatives. He is fascinated by the practical and the necessity to react to changing economic and social conditions from a legal standpoint, all the while being able to develop possible solutions that address the new conditions. His client base includes technology companies (IT), chemical and automobile companies, as well industrial production companies (steel).

Jürgen Röller is a joint-editor and author of the Personalbuch (Personnel Reference Manual). This annual publication is the standard reference source for personnel management, employment law, income tax law, and social security law. He is also a joint-author of the employment law edition of "Ratgeber Recht" (Legal Advisor).

Dr. Wolfgang Rebel

Attorney at Law | Of-Counsel

Dr. Wolfgang Rebel studied law at the University of Cologne from 1974 to 1980. Upon completing his degree, he worked as a research associate for the employment and commercial law department of the law school. He received his doctorate in 1984 and completed the second state examination in 1985. Dr. Wolfgang Rebel first worked as an attorney at the law firm of Dr. Küttner & Partner. From 1986 to 1990, he served as in-house counsel in the legal department of WDR (West German Broadcasting). From 1991 to 1993, he headed the publisher M. DuMont Schauberg's legal department. Where upon he was appointed to an executive position and served on the executive board. In this role, he was responsible for the areas human resources and law. In 1995, he joined Küttner as an attorney.

In addition to executives, publishers, and printers, his clientele also includes public and private broadcasters / TV stations, as well as companies in the automobile and banking sectors.

Dr. Wolfgang Rebel is a member of the Working Group of In-house Counsel Publishers. He is also a joint-author of the third edition of a book on outsourcing and employment law in regard to the restructuring of companies.

Robert Lungerich

Robert Lungerich studied law at the University of Cologne from 1982 to 1989. During his law internship, he worked as a research assistant at the University. In addition to this, he was employed at a major national German law firm. In 1992 he started his work as an attorney at Küttner.

Robert Lungerich practices in the areas of individual and collective employment law - he places particular emphasis on the latter, namely on works constitution law - and company retirement/pension plans. He accompanies negotiations between works councils and employers. This includes the introduction and conduct of conciliation committee proceedings. Particular emphasis is placed with a view to changes in company retirement / pension plans and the drafting and realization of organizational restructuring. His clientele includes companies from the industrial production (metal) segment, the technology (IT) and telecommunications segment, the public sector (energy industry and utility companies), as well as from the insurance sector.

Robert Lungerich is joint-author of an Employment Law Lexicon, an employment law volume for the series "Ratgeber Recht" (Legal Advisor) and the manual "Mandatspraxis Arbeitsrecht" ("Client Practice Employment Law").

Robert Lungerich is a member of the German Bar Association's Working Group of Attorneys specialized in Employment Law and has been a long time member of the Employment Law Committee of the Cologne Bar Association.

Bernd Esser

Bernd Esser studied law at the University of Cologne from 1980 to 1988. He completed his law internship at the Higher Regional Court of Cologne from 1989 to 1992. From 1988 to 1992, he was a research assistant to Prof. Dr. Dieter Gaul working in all areas of employment law. After completing several stages of his law internship at Küttner, Bernd Esser started at the firm as an attorney in 1992.

Bernd Esser has dedicated himself to the full spectrum of individual and collective employment law at Küttner. Of particular import is the restructuring, transfer and closure of companies. Most notable are his activities with regard to the restructuring and reorganization of Philipp Holzman AG. He has maintained longstanding relationships with clients in the construction industry, retail sector and the entire service sector. His client base includes many public sector employers.

Bernd Esser is a member of the German Bar Association's Working Group of Attorneys specialized in Employment Law and author of the Juris Practice Commentary to the Code of Social Law Book IX (SGB), he is also a member of the Bank-Collegium of the Academy of German Cooperatives in the field of employment law.

Gerd Schwamborn

Gerd Schwamborn studied law in Cologne from 1987 to 1989, in Clermont-Ferrand, France from 1989 to 1990 and in Trier from 1990 to 1991, concluding his studies in 1995 at the University of Cologne. Directly after his law internship at the Labor Court Cologne, among other venues, Gerd Schwamborn took up his work as an attorney in 1997 at Küttner.

Today, his main areas of practice are protection against dismissal, works constitution law, and temporary employment. He serves a wide spectrum of clientele ranging from the automobile industry, educational institutions, the transportation and shipping industry and finally he also includes works councils to his client base. He is also retained for cases in the practice areas of inheritance and probate law, leasing and letting law, and civil traffic law.

Gerd Schwamborn is a member of the German Bar Association's Working Group of Attorneys specialized in Employment Law.


Michael Dietzler

Michael Dietzler completed the study of law at the University of Cologne from 1991 to 1997. Before deciding to join Küttner, he gained professional experience in company and employment law in English speaking countries. Of particular note are his positions at a US automobile manufacturer in Detroit, as well as at a major international law firm in London.

Mr. Dietzler has been with Küttner since 1999, he is specialized in national individual and collective employment law, including the drafting of agreements, as well as company law. He advises and counsels well-known clients from the automobile, telecommunication, and energy industries, among others. Included in his client base are, however, also medium-sized enterprises, as well as executives and managing directors. Among the main areas of his practice are employment law advice and the accompaniment of company acquisitions and restructurings, advice and representation as it pertains to works council co-determination issues, configuration of working conditions and employment agreements as well as the counselling of executive staff in separation situations.

Michael Dietzler was a commercial and employment law lecturer at the University of Niederrhein from 2007 to 2013. He is also an author for the Bank-Collegium of the Academy of German Cooperatives in the field of employment law.


Dr. Herbert Hertzfeld

Dr. Herbert Hertzfeld studied law in Hannover and Cologne. He worked as a research assistant at Heinrich-Heine University in Düsseldorf where he received his PhD; his doctoral thesis was on civil litigation.

During his law internship he worked for Küttner, he also held other positions at a practice in the United States specializing in commercial law. Today, Dr. Herbert Hertzfeld is active in a consulting and forensic role across the field of employment law. He has specialized expertise in the area of company retirement/pension plans and in the drafting and enforcement of post-contractual competition prohibitions. He advises and represents companies in the pharmaceutical industry, trade and human resource service sector, as well as employees and works council members.

He particularly values the wide spectrum of challenges afforded him at Küttner and the resulting opportunity to address these challenges with creativity.

Dr. Herbert Hertzfeld is a member of the German Bar Association's Working Group of Attorneys specialized in Employment Law and is a member of the Labor Court Association. Dr. Tim Wißmann

Dr. Tim Wißmann studied law at the University of Bonn from 1991 to 1996. After receiving his doctorate and completing his master’s at the University of Edinburgh, Dr. Tim Wißmann started his practice as an attorney in early 2002 at an international law firm in the practice group Employment Pensions & Benefits. He joined Küttner as an attorney in the spring of 2005.

Dr. Wißmann counsels and advises clients in all employment law issues, while placing great emphasis on the practice area of restructuring. He has diverse experience in the practice areas of collective bargaining law, company retirement/pension plans and federal labor court litigation. A further area of emphasis of his practice addresses all issues pertaining to executive service agreements. He acts as a judge and attorney at arbitration tribunals.

Dr. Tim Wißmann publishes on a regular basis in law reviews and journals and is active as a speaker. He is a member of the Labor Law Court Association, the German Bar Association's Working Group of Attorneys specialized in Employment Law, the Specialized Attorneys Employment Law Forum (FFA), and the European Employment Lawyers Association. Karl-Dietmar Cohnen

Karl-Dietmar Cohnen studied law at the Universities of Bonn and Freiburg from 1971 to 1979. After his law internship he started his practice as an attorney in a big commercial law firm in Cologne in 1983. Since 1990, he was a partner of this firm, which evolved as an international law firm from several mergers both domestically and internationally. From the formation in 1999, he also led the employment law department of this international law firm. In 2007, he joined the Hamburg office of a US-based global law firm, where he led the German practice group employment. Karl-Dietmar Cohnen joined Küttner as a partner in October 2014.

Karl-Dietmar Cohnen has longstanding experience as an advisor of employers in complex employment restructurings, reorganizations of companies, outsourcing projects and transfers of undertakings. Further main areas of his practice include counselling and representation of companies in works-council co-determination, collective bargaining and compliance-related issues as well as the advice and representation of board members, managing directors and further executive staff. His client base comprises companies of the automobile supplier industry, the banking, cigarette and pharma sector.

Karl-Dietmar Cohnen is an associate lecturer for employment law at the University Fresenius in Cologne. He has authored the chapter on “transfers of undertakings” in the Munich handbook for attorneys on employment law. Thomas Niklas

Thomas Niklas studied law at the University of Bonn (Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität) from 1998 to 2003. After his law internship with stints – among others – at the Federal Ministry of Economics and Labor, at an international law firm in Cologne, and at a leading commercial law firm in Edinburgh, Thomas Niklas started his practice as an attorney in 2007 in the employment law team of an international commercial law firm. He joined Küttner as an attorney in 2012.

Thomas Niklas advises national and international companies, as well as managers on all aspects of both individual and collective labor and employment law. Dr. Benjamin Ittmann

Dr. Benjamin Ittmann studied law at the University of Bonn from 1996 to 2001 and worked as a research assistant for the Institute of Employment and Social Security law. After his doctorate and law internship, he started his practice as an attorney at a major German law firm in 2006. His main practice area was the representation and counseling of companies in employment law matters. Dr. Ittmann joined Küttner in 2010.

Dr. Ittmann advises and represents companies, executive bodies, executives and officers in all collective, individual employment, service agreement and company law matters. Main practice areas include advising companies on employment law issues, preparation and implementation of restructuring projects, as well as accompanying complex court cases. Dr. Ittmann has specialized expertise in the appointment, dismissal and removal of board members, executives and officers, as well as in the area of corporate body liability.

Thomas Faas

Thomas Faas studied law at the Rhine Friedrich Wilhelm University of Bonn from 1996 to 2001. After his law internship with stations – among others – at the Higher Labour Court of Cologne and the Cologne public agency for the protection of employees on the workplace, Thomas Faas started his practice as an attorney in the employment law department of an international law firm in Cologne in 2005. In 2007, he joined another global law firm at their office in Düsseldorf, where he practiced as a local partner from 2010. Thomas Faas joined Küttner in October 2014.

Thomas Faas advises and represents national and international companies as well as executives and officers on all aspects of individual and collective labour and employment law. He has longstanding experience in employment advice of clients in M&A-transactions, complex stand-alone employment restructurings and in drafting/negotiations of board member agreements. Furthermore, arising from comprehensive counselling and advice in numerous big insolvency cases, Thomas Faas has gained specialist expertise in insolvencyrelated employment law. Dr. Julian Wölfel

Dr. Julian Wölfel studied law from 2004 to 2008 at the University of Cologne, majoring in employment law. After completing his studies, he received a doctorate from the Institute for German and European Employment and Social Law, his doctoral thesis was on the drafting of severance payments in social compensation plans. He worked for international and national commercial law firms in the practice area employment law during his studies and his doctorate. In 2011, he started a two year law internship at the Regional Court of Bonn. During his internship, he also worked for Küttner, in the personnel department of an automobile group and at the foreign office. Dr. Wölfel has been with Küttner since 2011 and has worked as an attorney at Küttner since 2013.

Dr. Julian Wölfel counsels and represents his clients in all matters pertaining to individual and collective employment law. His main practice areas include employment law counsel within the scope of complex compliance-matters, company retirement/pension plans, as well as employment law topics incidental to insolvency law.

Katrin Peter

Attorney at Law

Katrin Peter studied law from 2008 to 2013 at the Eberhard-Karls-University in Tübingen and the Heinrich-Heine-University in Düsseldorf with a focus on labour law. During her studies and legal clerkship, she worked as a research assistant at a major international law firm in Düsseldorf in the field of employment law. In 2013 she started her two-year law clerkship with stints, inter alia, at the Düsseldorf Chamber of Crafts and Trades and the Regional Labor Court of Cologne. After she passed her second state examination in law in 2015, she worked for an Irish-German law firm in Dublin. Katrin Peter joined Küttner in 2016 as a lawyer. She also conducts her doctoral thesis on employment law issues within the framework of matrix structures in companies (Prof. Dr. Reinhard Vossen, University of Düsseldorf).

Katrin Peter advises and represents companies and executives in all questions of individual and collective labour law, especially in drafting contracts. Special emphasis is placed on issues of corporate codetermination, especially in the drafting of participation agreements in the European Company (SE) and the conduct of negotiations with the respective bodies.

Katrin Peter is a member of the German Labor Court Association and a member of the German Bar Association's Working Group of Attorneys specialized in Employment Law.


Dr. Marius Fritzsche

Dr. Marius Fritzsche studied law at the University of Münster (Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität) from 1999 to 2004. After receiving his doctorate in employment law and his law internship with stints – among others – in Sydney and Tokyo, Dr. Fritzsche started his practice as an attorney in 2008 at an international law firm in the practice group Employment Pensions & Benefits. In 2015, he joined the employment and compliance department of another global law firm, where he practiced as a counsel most recently. He joined Küttner as an attorney in the beginning of 2018.

Dr. Fritzsche advises national and international companies, as well as executives and members of corporate bodies on all aspects of individual and collective labour and employment law, as well as on service agreements, including their representation in court. In addition to advice on all sorts of ongoing employment matters, he has a focus on transactional employment law, in particular on structuring corporate acquisitions and advice on transfers of undertakings.

Dr. Fritzsche publishes in law reviews and journals and provides trainings to clients on various employment law related topics. He is a member of the German Bar Association's Work Group on Employment and Labour Law and a member of the German Labour Court Association.


Dr. Björn Braun, LL.M.

Attorney at Law

Dr. Björn Braun studied law at the Universities of Göttingen, Salonika and Bonn. After that he completed a postgraduate degree program at the University of Cologne with the main focus on employment law and was awarded with a Master of Business Law (LL.M.). Thereafter, he completed his doctorate with a thesis on an individual labor and employment law topic. During his two-year law internship, he worked in the human resources department of the Deutschlandfunk and in the employment team of two international law firms in Cologne. Dr. Björn Braun started his practice as an attorney at an international law firm in the practice group Employment & Pensions in 2015. He joined Küttner as an attorney in the spring of 2018.

Dr. Björn Braun advises national and international companies on all aspects of individual and collective labor and employment law. An area of emphasis of his practice is the representation of his clients towards the security authorities or in the German social courts during the audit process regarding the social security status of shareholding managing directors.

A further focus is on advising companies on day-to-day employment-law matters, the consultancy on litigation relating to termination and drafting contracts of employment and different types of termination agreements.

Claudia Vey

Attorney at Law

Claudia Vey studied law at Friedrich-Wilhelms-University in Bonn from 2008 to 2014. At the same time, she gained her first practical experience in the HR department of an IT service provider. After her studies, Ms. Vey worked as a research associate for a business law firm specializing in employment law as well as for the Institute for Employment Law and Social Security Law at the University of Bonn. In 2015, she began her two-year traineeship, which she completed at the Chamber of Industry and Commerce in Cologne as well as at two medium-sized employment law firms. She joined Küttner in 2017 as a lawyer.

Claudia Vey advises and represents national and international companies as well as executives in all matters of individual and collective labour and employment law.

Claudia Vey is a member of the Work Group on Employment and Labour Law of the German Bar Association.


Dr. Maren Henseler

Attorney at Law

Right after her high school graduation in the summer of 2002, Dr. Maren Henseler moved – supported by a soccer scholarship – to the United States, where she pursued her studies and earned a degree at Berry College, GA (Bachelor of Arts). After having returned to Germany, she studied law at the universities of Bonn and Toulouse, France, before she accomplished her first state exam in April 2011. Subsequently, she wrote her doctoral thesis at the institute of constitutional and administrative law at the University of Cologne, where she worked as a research assitant for the time of her doctoral studies as well as during her legal clerkship. In 2015, she started her legal clerkship at Cologne district court with stages at the German Embassy in Prague, an international law firm in Dusseldorf and the DFL Deutsche Fußball Liga in Frankfurt. In early 2018, Dr. Henseler started her career as a lawyer with Küttner.

Dr. Maren Hensler advises and represents national and international companies as well as executives in all matters of individual and collective labour and employment law.

Thomas Köllmann

Attorney at Law

Thomas Köllmann studied law at the University of Cologne from 2010 to 2015, majoring in corporate law. At the same time he worked at the Institute for Labour and Business Law of the University of Cologne. In 2015, he began his two-year law internship at the District Court of Cologne with stages at the Cologne Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the German Embassy Bangkok and the law firm Küttner. Besides his studies and law internship he also worked for a major international law firm in the practice group Employment Pensions & Benefits. Thomas Köllmann joined Küttner in 2016 and has been working as an attorney since 2018.

As part of his doctoral thesis he is dealing with labour law issues with particular reference to the General Data Protection Regulation (Prof. Dr. Martin Henssler, University of Cologne)

Dr. Wolfdieter Küttner

Founding Partner

Dr. Wolfdieter Küttner studied Law in Bonn and Berlin from 1956 to 1961. He served as a law intern in Bonn, Luxemburg and Lyon. From 1965 to 1970, he served as in-house counsel and served on the executive board of the German Association of Lignite Producing Companies and the Employers' Association for Rhineland Lignite. Subsequently, he was the head of the legal department for mining damages and resettlement at Rheinbraun. Since 1973 he practiced law exclusively.

His main practice area at Küttner was collective employment law; in particular, the conduct of negotiations with works councils and unions, in respect to mergers, de-mergers, and reorganizations. Dr. Wolfdieter Küttner has a wealth of experience in advising and counseling companies and executives on the termination of executive service agreements and in the drafting of company agreements, such as articles of incorporation, association and the like.

Dr. Wolfdieter Küttner was a long serving board member of the German Bar Association's Working Group of Attorneys specialized in Employment Law. Until 2008, he served on the Association Committee of the Employment Court Association and belonged to the German section of the International Society for Labor Law and Social Security.

He is the author of numerous academic publications in law reviews and journals. In particular, he provided the title for the "Personalbuch" (Personnel Reference Manual), which has been published annually since 1994.

Dr. Wolfdieter Küttner retired from his work as an attorney in 2010.


Klaus-Dietrich Küttner

Founding Partner

Klaus-Dietrich Küttner began his career working in the areas of criminal, tax, and company law, ultimately specializing in employment law. The main emphasis of his work is the representation of interests and providing advice and counsel in respect to restructuring, mergers, collective bargaining agreement change issues, as well as conflict resolution in the area of works constitution law.

He was a sought after advisor and litigator by executives, board members, and managing directors. Among his longstanding clientele were nationally operating companies from the metal and automobile industries, as well as major companies in the food and service sectors. He was advisor to a multitude of works councils in the medium-sized enterprise sector and the banking industry.

Klaus-Dietrich Küttner moderated training courses organized by Küttner. He also prepared expert opinions in employment law matters. Internationally, he represented the firm's interest in the Integrated Advisory Group (IAG). He also represented the practice in the European Employment Lawyers Association (EELA).

Klaus-Dietrich Küttner retired from his work as an attorney in 2011.
